The University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus is introducing five new
programmes to its list of Undergraduate Degrees come September, 2024.
Psychology, Sports Coaching, Sport Kinetics, Pharmacy and Generative Pharmacy.
The five new programmes are all Bachelor’s Degrees that will be offered by UWI
FIC.
Dr. Adeola Matthew is the Recruitment Officer for the University of the West
Indies Five Islands Campus.
“We know that mental health issues are at the forefront so no longer are we going
to wait on someone else to come and give us advice on certain problem, we really
are developing into societies where we have good mental health specialists who are
able to do that. So, we have brought on a full degree in psychology. Presently, we
have it as a minor in our School of Business and Management but we see the need
to upgrade it to a full degree programme in psychology,” she stated.
Generative Pharmacy involves the use of Artificial Intelligence. The UWI FIC,
seeing its importance, is adding the Bachelor’s programme to its list. It is also a
way in which the shortage of pharmacists in the country can be addressed.
“The idea is that this programme is intended to make pharmacy more efficient and
even safer. One important function that a pharmacist has is to ensure that the
cocktail that is being prescribed to you is suitable for you and your specific
condition, in collaboration with your physician. So generative pharmacy is able to
use your medical history, look at the general prescription that is there for you and
to be able to help make critical decisions. We are therefore hoping to train our
pharmacists for the future,” Dr. Mathew noted.
Interested individuals can visit the campus’ website for more information on the
new programmes that will be added and how to go about applying as a student.
