There was a strong pledge to further strengthen the already excellent relations between the People’s Republic of China and Antigua and Barbuda when both countries held a flag-raising ceremony to mark the 40th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Beijing and St. John’s.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne said Antigua and Barbuda strongly supports the “One-China” policy and recognises China’s territorial integrity.

Browne continued that Antigua and Barbuda will continue to stand with China as a friend in the international community and will support its efforts to counter climate change and other global issues of concern to both countries.

“We continue to wish the people of China continued success, recognizing that their success is our success. China has been easily one of the most benevolent nations to the government and people of Antigua and Barbuda,” PM Browne stated.

Chinese ambassador, Zhang Yanling noted that over the past forty years, the amicable relationship between both nations has spanned generations.

“We see a future of flourishing bilateral relations. The beginning of a new year also marks a new stage of our relations. Amid an evolving international environment, global volatility and multiple challenges, China will continue to stand in solidarity and work closely with Antigua and Barbuda.

“We believe that equality and friendship will always be the main theme of China-Antigua and Barbuda relations and win-win cooperation will always be the common goal of both sides,” Ambassador Zhang stated.

The flag-raising ceremony was held on the grounds of the Office of the Prime Minister and attended by Foreign Affairs Minister, E. P. Chet Greene, members of the diplomatic corps, Antigua and Barbuda’s ambassador to China, Brian Stuart-Young, Commissioner of the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda, Atlee Rodney and Chief of Defense Staff of the Antigua Barbuda Defence Force, Colonel Telbert Benjamin.
