Family, friends, and former colleagues of the retired airline pilot, Captain Wade
Austin McDonald, who died in Aruba on Sunday, gathered at the VC Bird
International Airport on Thursday, as the aircraft that flew his body back to
Antigua was given a water cannon salute.
Cpt. McDonald was remembered as an outstanding airline captain who helped to
train and shape the careers of hundreds of pilots, who flew for LIAT and other
airlines around the world.
Former chairman of the Leeward Islands Pilot’s Association, Capt. Carl Burke said
of McDonald, that aviation in the region had suffered a significant loss at the
passing the distinguished pilot.
“He has inspired and trained many of the pilots who went through LIAT over the
past three decades. He was a very influential guy and one for whom I had much
respect,” Cpt. Burke stated.
He said the gathering at the airport was their way of honouring Capt. McDonald
and to pay their final respects.
Capt. McDonald was Guyanese by birth but lived in Antigua and Barbuda for
many years.
