Principal of the University of the West Indies Five Island Campus, Professor C
Justin Robinson, wants the university to be a leader in thought and advocacy for
Antigua and Barbuda and the rest of the OECS.
Prof. Robinson, who took up the leadership at the university in August last year,
shared his vision at Thursday’s meeting of the University Council.
“I see a critical role for the campus as we go forward and since we came into
existence. From the outset, the campus has been exhibiting thought-leadership for
Antigua and Barbuda and the OECS and being an agent for advocacy. A key
objective of the campus has been to create an OECE-focused research culture
targeting areas that are of special importance to the Eastern Caribbean,” he stated.
Prof. Robinson identified the areas as;
 Artificial Intelligence,
 The Blue Economy and Oceanography
 Crime and Criminal Justice
 Chronic Non-Communicable Disease and Public Health
 Climate Change Adaptation
 Disaster Risk Management
 Food Security
 Inter-Island Transportation
 Water Resources management
He said these are the areas that the UWI FIC has been focusing on because of the
special niche and because of the special resonance of these matters for Eastern
Caribbean countries.
With respect to AI, Prof. Robinson said there is need to see OECS leadership in
this regard, noting that the UWI FIC is the only campus within the university
family that currently offers a programme in this new emerging field.
