On Thursday, police began combing through the burnt remains of a wooden house in Upper Gambles where a man, said to be in his 50’s, lost his life in the fire.

Reports are that fire tenders from the St. John’s Fire Station responded to the call about the fire sometime before 9pm Wednesday.

The reports state that even as the fire department rushed to the scene of the blaze, just east of KFC in Upper Gambles, they were unable to save the 25 x 14 wooden structure or the life of the inhabitant of the dwelling.

Fire Chief Elvis Weaver was unable to provide much more information when contacted by PointE Xpress on Wednesday night.

He did, however, confirm that he had received reports of a fatality due to the fire.

ACP Weaver said it was too early to determine the cause of the fire and indicated that the identity of the fire victim, who lived alone, would not yet be disclosed.

Pointe Xpress will provide further details as they come to hand.
