Minister of Sports, Daryll Matthew

Minister of Sports, Hon. Daryll Matthew, says his ministry is in regular contact with Mundo with respect to the upgrade of the Yasco Sports Complex. Mundo is the company that is both providing and laying the track. Matthew says the track has been on island for a while but on the day the technicians were preparing to lay the track airports around the world began to close due to the coronavirus pandemic. Their technicians therefore requested to return home immediately to avoid becoming stuck in Antigua away from their families.

The minister stated that he has had dialog with the technicians, who are from Italy and Panama. Both individuals expressed concern about having to quarantine in Antigua and Barbuda and again upon returning home. They have therefore expressed the preference to remain at home until things have stabilised. “These are some of the issues we are trying to overcome.” Matthew noted, “but in the meantime, we will start work in a few weeks on other areas that need upgrades at the facility like seating.”
