Senior officials of the Antigua and Barbuda Bureau of Standards (ABBS) are using
events surrounding World Metrology Day 2023 to focus the nation’s attention on
metrology, the work of the ABBS, and the importance of its work for Antigua and
Barbuda.
World Metrology Day was observed on Saturday, May 20 th and the ABBS
officials are using the event to make several appearances on local media to explain
how the work of the ABBS affects their lives in a number of ways.
Senior Standardization Officer (with responsibility for Metrology) Alan Michael
and the Manager of Information Services, Solange Baptiste from the Antigua and
Barbuda Bureau of Standards are scheduled to make the media rounds starting on
Monday, May 22 nd and continuing on Tuesday, May 23 rd , and into the rest of the
week.
During these media appearances, the discussions will be based on World
Metrology Day 2023 (Saturday 20th May) under the theme: "Measurements
supporting the global food system" and the ABBS' Metrology mandate including
implementation of the International System of Units (SI).
Metrology is the science of measurement; it is one of the pillars of quality
infrastructure.
Legal metrology involves the verification of measuring instruments used in trade to
ensure that consumers get accurate value/quantities for what they pay for, and
producers and suppliers do not give away their products but offer consistent
measurements of their products for sale.
The ABBS has the mandate to carry out legal metrology activities. It is also
responsible for the transition to the use of the International System of Units (SI) or
metric system, as the sole system of measurement for Antigua and Barbuda.
The department is also considering the WMD 2023 theme and hopes to have
persons who are into food production provide insights as to how measurements
impact their areas of food production.
