Thousands converge on St. John’s for T-Shirt Mas

Thousands converged on St. John’s on Saturday for the T-Shirt Mas, one of the
key events for Carnival 2023.
The events saw participation from the top T-Shirt Mas Bands, with some boasting
revelers totaling in the thousands. It was a kaleidoscope of colours, as participants
jammed to the music of jam-bands or Hi-Fi systems in a festive atmosphere.
The revelers partied to the music from late afternoon to early evening, as thousands
more lined the parade route to watch and to enjoy the spectacle.
Minister responsible for Creative Industries, including the National Festivals,
Daryll Matthew, said he was quite pleased with the turnout, estimated as one of the
biggest ever. He said the final figures will be available at a later date, but the T-
ShirtMas was another indication of a successful 2023 Carnival so far.
He said the standards displayed by the Mr. and Miss Teenage Pageant and the
Queen of Carnival Pageant demonstrated the high level of preparation and
execution of these events.
He also invited members of the public to continue to come out in support of the
remaining events for Carnival 2023.
Meanwhile, the Junior Carnival Show was on full display at Carnival City on
Sunday afternoon. This event features the junior sections of the major Mas Bands
as well as participation from several schools featuring costumes designed and built
by selected builders/designers contracted by the Festivals Commission.
The Junior Carnival Programme started with a parade from the Multi-Purpose
Cultural Centre at Perry Bay to Carnival City, where the troupes and groups
crossed the staged to be judged.
As can be expected, the event is largely an activity for families who come out to
enjoy the young people as they display their various costumes.
The Junior Calypso Monarch Competition followed the Junior Carnival
Programme.
In a related development, there have been reports of several incidents that got out
of hand, resulting in injuries for a number of individuals, The police are yet to
confirm such reports.
