Coming off a successful Night of Champions event, the School's Basketball Unit within the Ministry of
Sports will now be turning their attention to female basketballers, as they are gearing up to host a training
camp for the nation's youth.
Carl 'Bowlie' Knight, Coordinator of the School’s Basketball Program made the revelation on Monday,
during an appearance on the Platinum Sports Center radio show.
"At this point in time, it's exam time and so we back away so that our students can go do their exams and
come out with flying colors, but as soon as those exams are finished, we will be calling out our females.
"Usually, we would call out a male and female team and have our training at YMCA and JSC, but I think
this time we are going to concentrate on our females because we see they are very interested in the sport
and we want to make that grow, and so we are going to call on all the females to come to JSC for practice
sessions," Knight said. Cedric 'Supa' David will be heading those sessions.
Knight explained that due to the high levels of interest and the fact that there is no vibrant female program
within the local association, he and his team needed to find other avenues to keep the young ladies
interested.
He commended the two clubs, Wings and Cyclones for their continued effort in keeping female basketball
alive.
Wings recently hosted the 17th edition of the Gillian Brazier tournament where Cyclones and Wings
competed alongside teams from Canada.
The former national basketballer also touched on the Night of Champions event and mentioned that due
to its success, "it will now become a staple event for his department."
"It definitely will be, and we know where we had the little hiccups and we will make sure that it is even
better," Knight added.
He thanked all of the sponsors and other people who would have played a role in the occasion.
The Night of Champions event was held on Easter Sunday, April 9 at the JSC Sports Complex. It saw six
finals being played in the respective categories- Mini Girls Primary, Mini Boys Primary, Mini Boys
Secondary, Junior Boys, Senior Girls, and Senior Boys.

Cedar Grove Primary earned the double in the Mini Girls and Mini Boys Primary sections while St.
Joseph's Academy (SJA) finished their season undefeated to hoist the Mini Boys Secondary trophy.
Clare Hall Secondary School (CHSS) was the Junior Boys’ champions.
All Saints Secondary School (ASSS), the Senior Girls winners, and Princess Margaret School (PMS),
champions in the Senior Boys division.
