A 50-year-old employee of the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre (SLBMC) found himself on the wrong side of the law after he was accused of doing far more than caring for the patients in his charge.

As the details of the bizarre case became clear, it was revealed to the shock and horror of all that the orderly was accused of robbing a corpse.

In the facts revealed, Delmore Webson allegedly stole three rings, valued at $2500.00, from a 42-year-old woman’s lifeless body on 1st January, 2023.

The woman was pronounced dead at the hospital after she developed difficulty breathing and complained of tightness in her chest while walking in St. John’s with her daughter.

A doctor who pronounced her dead was the first to suspect that something was awry after they observed that her rings were missing.

The doctor contacted the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) who dispatched officers to investigate.

The investigation soon led officers to look in Webson’s direction, but he denied taking the rings. He did, however, lead police to where two of the three rings were hidden inside a bathroom in the hospital’s emergency wing.

Still maintaining his innocence, Webson then took the police to another location where the third ring was discovered.

It was at this point that he was arrested by the police on suspicion of larceny.

Webson eventually admitted to committing the crime when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Joanne Walsh.

Walsh imposed a fine of $2500.00 on Webson. Should he fail to make the payment, he will serve a sentence of one year at His Majesty’s prison.
