A national highway beautification project has just been launched by the Ministry
of Works, Housing and Urban Development with the planting of palm trees along
one of the nation’s highways.
In a statement, the Ministry said the initiative is in keeping with the government’s
mandate to plant more trees in an effort to help combat climate change.
National Housing and Urban Renewal Development Company (NHURDC) is the
lead agency spearheading the project with the planting of palms along Friars Hill
Road.
NHURDC said it has incorporated several other agencies to ensure the success of
the project. These include the Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA).
“APUA has indicated that they will commence the burial of the electric wires
along that highway in 2024 and already it is working with NHURDC to allocate
the proper placement of the palm trees,” a spokesman for the ministry said.

This beautification project will continue along the other major highways, not only
adding to the overall aesthetics of the country but also aligns with its commitment
to Sustainable Development Goals #13 and #15 (to take steps to combat climate
and promote responsible use of the environment).
The Ministry of Housing, Lands & Urban Renewal encourages citizens to do their
part in helping to combat climate change by also planting trees themselves.
