A public discussion is taking place Thursday as part of an initiative by the Ministry
of Education to promote mathematics and to reverse what are seen as worrying
trends regarding the subject within the education system.
The theme of the public discussion is ‘The Heart of the Matter’ and it is expected
to explore various aspects of mathematics education, with an aim of enhancing
what currently exists.
Mathematics results for students at the primary and secondary school levels are
concerning for education officials, who have taken steps to improve the subject
area, in order to yield satisfactory outcomes.
In addition to the remedial work being carried out with students and new and
improved approaches being adopted, the Ministry of Education is also engaging
key stakeholders, the latest being Thursday’s forum.
“This conversation aims to address the challenges faced by students, identify
effective strategies, and foster collaboration among stakeholders to enhance
Mathematics education in our country,” said Shoya Hurst, Acting Education
Officer, Curriculum Mathematics.
The event will be held at the Sir John E. St. Luce Finance and Conference Centre,
commencing at 5 p.m on Thursday 14 th March, 2024.
