A Newfield man has been found guilty of murder in a case in which a mixed jury of seven women and two men returned their verdict after examining the evidence for approximately three hours.

Kenworth “Billy” Charles was found guilty of the murder of Fitzroy Robins following an incident in Villa on 24th July, 2020.

Robins was a soldier and an immigration officer before migrating to the United States. He was later deported back to Antigua and Barbuda.

The case, heard before Justice Colin Williams, was prosecuted by lead attorney, Shannon Jones-Gittens.

The defence team was headed by Wendel Robinson who was assisted by Merrise McDougal.

The prosecution built its case around the facts surrounding the stabbing which took place when a confrontation ensued between Charles and Robins.

The Crown alleged that the accused went to a popular “liming” spot on the night the confrontation took place. During the incident, Robins is said to have armed himself with a piece of firewood while Charles wielded a knife.

During the fight, Robins was stabbed multiple times and later succumbed to those injuries.

Charles was arrested and charged with Robin’s murder.

The trial, which lasted more than a week, heard from many witnesses called by both the prosecution and defence teams.

Among those giving evidence was a police photographer who produced as evidence forty-five photos of the crime scene.

Items from the scene of the crime were also produced.

Justice Williams said that he will deliver the sentence on 22nd March.

Charles faces a maximum of life in prison for the crime.

Robinson indicated he will file an appeal on behalf of his client as he had hoped for the lesser charge of manslaughter to be considered.

He said he will also request a social inquiry report for the court’s consideration prior to sentencing.
