A system of disturbed weather located south of Antigua and Barbuda gave rise to
heavy rainfall across the twin-island state. The rain forced the cancelation of
several events, including the second of the two-day Piango festival being held at
Cades Bay.
Weather forecaster Lennox Josiah said the system was due to move away from
Antigua and Barbuda, but not before dumping over two inches of rain within three
hours on Sunday afternoon.
The forecaster reported that most of the rain fell in the Diamond Estate area, where
2.2 inches of rain were recorded. The second-highest total was in the Sir Vivian
Richards Stadium area where 1.81 inches of rain fell. Other notable rainfall was in
the Orange Valley area where 1.78 inches were recorded. At Cobbs Cross, the total
was 1.64 and in Bethesda, the total was 1.46 inches.
These rainfall totals were up to 3:00 pm on Sunday and the Met Office said it
anticipated further rainfall later in the afternoon and into Monday.
According to Josiah, the Met Office will continue to monitor the area of disturbed
weather or any signs of further development. However, he noted that should this
happen, the system would not pose any further threat to Antigua and Barbuda as it
would be moving further away from the two islands.
Meanwhile, sources say the second day of the Piango Festival will take place next
Sunday, thereby allowing vendors to generate more business.
