Farmers encouraged to take advantage of the upcoming rainy season to plant

Farmers in Antigua and Barbuda should maximize the anticipated rainfall expected
over the next few months of the traditional rainy season to plant crops and store
water.
The advice comes from Agriculture Minister, E.P Chet Greene, who recognized
that whilst there is an ongoing, prolonged drought, the months of mid-August to
the end of November normally usher in most of the rainfall the country experiences
in a year.
“We are all thankful for the recent showers; we all pray for additional showers. We
of course don’t really wish for hurricanes, but we know that it is during the
hurricane season that the showers are likely to come, so I want to encourage
farmers to prepare for the showers,” he suggested.
Greene said the ministry has already embarked on a programme of preparation for
the expected rains. These include cleaning the waterways as well as constructing
new water catchment facilities. “We understand the importance of food security
and food sovereignty issues,” the agriculture minister remarked.
Greene’s comments came at the opening of one of the containers of fertilizers
donated to the government and people of Antigua and Barbuda from the Kingdom
of Morocco, in Africa.
