The announcement of the date for the By-Election in St. Mary’s South (SMS)
signals the official launch of the campaign by the two main political parties to win
the seat.
While the outcome will not affect the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party’s ability
to retain office, it will provide some comfort for the administration, as it only has a
one-seat majority in the House of Representatives.
It is not surprising, therefore, that the ABLP has pulled out its top officials to help
the political newcomer, Dwayne George, in a bid to help him win the seat.
Speaking at a public rally in Bolans on Saturday, at the end of a whistle-stop,
Prime Minister Gaston Browne, said George has the competence to serve in his
Cabinet and that there is a seat for him, but he first has to win the seat.
“George is a qualified man who still lives among you here in Bolans. Because of
his qualifications, he can serve in any ministry in my government. However,
should he win, there is a place for him in the Ministry of Finance where I am the
senior minister,” PM Browne stated.
The prime minister reported that since his selection as the potential candidate for
the ABLP, George has been meeting regularly with the Cabinet to report on
priority areas that need attention in the constituency. He added that the work that is
being done in the area has come from the lobbying efforts of George.
PM Browne noted that the soon-to-be candidate’s influence also extended beyond
the Cabinet. He disclosed that at a recent meeting, George held with Rob Barrett of
Elite Island Resorts, managers of the Jolly Beach Hotel, he was able to get the
hotelier to pledge 100 jobs for people in the area; that was after Barrett initially
offered 25 jobs.
The prime minister encouraged the people of SMS to cast their votes for George as
this will enable him to continue the effective work that he has been doing, on their
behalf, in the constituency.
