The cabinet has agreed to honour the late Dr. Sir Alford Walwyn with an official funeral.

Dr. Walwyn, the country’s leading vision specialist for many decades, recently passed away at the age of 97.

“The Cabinet has learned of the death of Dr. Sir Alford Walwyn, a National Honouree who provided decades of service to helping those whose eyesight had to be corrected.

“He was a great eye surgeon removing thousands of cataracts thereby causing improvement in patients’ ability to see.  The Cabinet decided to offer an official funeral for this Knight Grand Cross recipient who will be buried next month,” the cabinet notes stated.

The loss created by his passing and his legacy of service were also recognised by the Medical Association of Antigua and Barbuda (MAAB), of which Dr. Walwyn was a founding member in the 1950s and served as its president for many years.

“We are grateful for his efforts and dedication to healthcare in Antigua and Barbuda serving the general public and the medical fraternity.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time. He touched so many lives throughout his career and lifetime,” said a statement penned by current president of the MAAB, Dr. Alafea Stevens.
