An attack on the billing system of the Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA)
has been thwarted, thanks to the intervention of the government’s Information
Technology Services.
A report was made to the Cabinet on Wednesday, stating that a malware attack on
APUA was defeated by the experts in the Antigua and Barbuda Information
Technology Service, and a crisis was averted.
Cabinet sources say the quick actions and the skills of the technicians in the
Information Technology Services prevented APUA from having to pay huge
amounts of money in ransom, to restore its system had the attack been successful.
The sources explain that malware attacks are now common threats to companies
across the globe as cybercriminals use these computer viruses to disable a
company’s computer network. Under these circumstances, the affected company is
then forced to pay large sums of money to have their systems restored.
