More and more people are pledging their support for the CIBC FirstCaribbean’s
annual Walk for the Cure with approximately 800 participants taking part in the
event last Saturday.
Speaking after the Walk, one of the bank’s Walk Managers, Natasha Charles, said
that they were overwhelmed by the support of the staff, sponsors, well-wishers,
and the general public.
“In this our 12 th year of the Walk for the Cure, the public came out in their
hundreds. It was wonderful. We also welcomed for the first time approximately
400 students who are part of the organisation GoodHumans268 which is an
initiative of a group of educators and links 22 schools. As we continue to raise
awareness of this dreaded disease while at the same time raising funds for care and
to support families, we must express our thanks to everyone who participated.”
There was also great participation by Corporate Sponsors, with UWI having 63
walkers, AS Bryden 48, and Galley Bay 35.
Country Head, Ladesa James-Williams said as she watched the massive support,
she felt a sense of pride because more persons are beginning to become aware of
cancer and its effects.
“We are pleased by the incredible turnout which shows how deeply cancer has
impacted all Antiguans and Barbudans. We remain committed to assisting the
Oncology Department at Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre and Breast Friends in their
fight against cancer. We walk to bring awareness and raise funds but also to show
survivors that they have our love and support. We look forward to Walk for the
Cure 2024.”
The 2022 Walk for the Cure donated EC$65,000 to Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre
and Breast Friends.
