Health disaster coordinators from across the Caribbean are meeting in St. John’s
this week to sharpen their ability to respond to a future health disaster such as the
recent COVID-19 pandemic.
The Ministry of Health, Wellness, Social Transformation and the Environment will
be hosting the Caribbean Health Disaster Coordinators Meeting from May 22nd to
May 24th, 2023, at the Sandals Grande Resort.
Coming out of the experiences of the COVID-19 pandemic, the health disaster
coordinators want to ensure that any future health disaster would generate a
different response based on the lessons learned from the pandemic.
“The meeting is being sponsored by the Pan American Health Organization
(PAHO) with assistance from USAID. This meeting will bring together health
disaster coordinators from Antigua and Barbuda and the rest of the region to
discuss issues related to disaster management. The participants will review past
experiences with health emergencies and will create strategies to respond should
another occur, particularly in the post-COVID era,” a spokesperson for the
Ministry of Health stated.
