The Bethesda Primary school has been earmarked for re-purposing to become a
satellite campus for the Harrison Centre’s Institute of Continuing Education
(ABICE) focusing on agricultural science.
Making the announcement was Education Minister, Daryll Matthew, who reported
that the Cabinet has already given the green-light to proceed with the expansion of
the course offerings of the Harrison’s Centre.
Matthew told the Browne and Browne show that the Harrison itself is in for major
upgrade where the ‘old’ section of the facilities will be replaced with new
buildings. The re-purposing of the Bethesda Primary school also forms part of the
expansion of the course offerings at the centre.
“One of the things that we are now doing is to have the Harrison Centre offer an
agricultural programme and that will be at the Bethesda Primary school. A
curriculum is now being developed to come on stream in January where the school
will become a campus of ABICE and where it will offer courses such as the
fundamentals of agriculture, aquaponics, the business of agriculture among
others,” the minister revealed.
He noted that the location of the school, in one of the nation’s agricultural belts,
opens up the opportunities for collaborations between students and neighbouring
farmers to do internship programmes that would benefit both the farmers and the
students.
“We are trying to build out the entire education infrastructure; we trying to build
out ABICE as a technical-vocational training institution where our students can not
only have the benefits of learning of to do the ‘trades’ such as electricals, carpentry
and masonry etc., but now agriculture and the associated areas whether its bee-
keeping, aquaponics or crop production will be a part of this new facility at the re-
purposed Bethesda Primary school,” he remarked.
