George Alexander Sheppard of Gunthorpes celebrated his 100th birthday on Tuesday, marking a significant milestone. The Government of Antigua and Barbuda honored him with an EC$10,000 cheque as part of its centenarian recognition initiative. This program celebrates citizens who reach the age of 100, acknowledging their longevity, sacrifices, and contributions to their families, communities, and the nation. Born in Jennings, Sheppard has lived in various communities, including Winthorpes, Parham, and All Saints, before settling in Gunthorpes. Throughout his life, he has witnessed significant changes in Antigua and Barbuda, embodying values of hard work, perseverance, and devotion to family. The celebration was attended by Governor General Sir Rodney Williams, family, friends, and representatives from the Ministry of Social Development. The event featured remarks from the Community Development and Citizens’ Engagement Division, Permanent Secretary Rosa Greenaway, Leader of the Opposition Jamale Pringle, and the acting director of Community Development and Citizens’ Engagement. Sheppard’s great-granddaughter delivered a scripture reading, and his daughter shared reflections on his life and impact. Additional gifts were presented to Sheppard in recognition of his remarkable journey and contributions.
