Antigua experiences another day of heavy rains

Continuing instability in the upper atmosphere gave rise to heavy downtowns of
several parts of Antigua on Thursday forcing the cancelation of a number of
events.
Heavy rains from mid-morning resulted in many roadways in and around St John’s
turning to rivers of water making driving hazardous for many motorists. There was
a lull in the rainfall after several hours, but by mid-afternoon the downpours
resumed causing traffic jams and bottlenecks at many intersections and highways.
The Met Office said instability from the trough that affected the area earlier in the
week, coupled with moisture in the atmosphere triggered the heavy downpours.
The system remained in the area overnight and the Met Office said while it expects
rain to continue into Friday, it would not be to the intensity as happened on
Thursday.
Rainfall amounts varied depending on the areas of the island. Most of the rains fell
in the northern, north-western and northeastern sections of the island. This
included St. John’s. But in the south, southeast and eastern sections of the island
the rainfall was minimal.
Improvements are expected for Friday.
