More than $100,000.00 has been approved by the government, in preparation for

the upcoming by-election in St. Mary’s South.

Incoming Supervisor of Elections, Ian Hughes, has confirmed that the Antigua and

Barbuda Electoral Commission (ABEC), is in receipt of the funds and is moving

ahead with plans.

No date has been revealed when eligible voters of the constituency will be allowed

to select their members of parliament. However, ABEC’s preparations continue

A by-election was triggered following the resignation of the United Progressive

Party’s MP Kelvin Simon in June.

Simon is returning to contest the seat on his party’s behalf, while Senator Dwayne

George is the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party’s candidate.

As the nation awaits the date, Ian Hughes reiterates that all rules relating to a

general election will apply in the upcoming by-election, except that only eligible

voters in St. Mary’s South, will participate in the process.

Hughes is expected to receive his instruments of appointment sometime next week.
