A workshop that is designed to steer financial institutions and insurance companies towards offering finances and coverage for at-risk communities opens at the Methodist Conference Centre today.
Organised jointly by the Caribbean Development Policy Centre based in Barbados and the Gilbert Agricultural and Rural Development Centre (GARD), the workshop will attract representatives from financial institutions, including credit unions as well as insurance companies.
Twenty-five representatives are set to attend the workshop that will run over two days.
Executive Director of the GARD Centre, June Jackson explained that this week’s workshop is the first of a two-part series of workshops where the focus will be on how to offer financing and insurance coverage to local farmers.
Part two of the workshop is slated from April 2-3 where the attendees will be members of the local farming community.
Jackson explained that the idea is to encourage farmers to seek insurance for their crops or animals as they are quite vulnerable to the vagaries of the weather as well as to larceny of both crops and animals.
The workshop will help the financial institutions to fashion special packages that meet the peculiar needs of farmers.
