UWI’s Approval of Fourth Campus Expected Tomorrow

Thursday 30th May, 2019-Attorney General the Hon. Steadroy Benjamin left the country yesterday with Education Minister, the Honourable Michael Browne and other technicians from the Ministry of Education ahead of a meeting on Friday with the Finance and General Purposes Committee of the University of West Indies.

It is expected that at the end of that meeting, the Technical Committee’s approval of the commencement of the Fourth Landed Campus of the UWI at Five Islands, Antigua, in September 2019 will be ratified.

Government is confident final approval will be given. Several gaps were identified by the technical committee, which the government stated has or is just about to be closed. One area has to do with internet connection and adequate internet speed.

A sum of EC$154,000 have been set aside to bump up the speed of the I.T. connections at all four campuses: ABIIT, ABHTI, ASC, Five Islands.

Once these requirements are met, the information minister stated that the rest will be left up to the UWI.

The UWI will name a Registrar and other officials, and identify lecturers and professors for all disciplines that are to be taught.

Attorney General Steadroy Benjamin is optimistic that the vision of the educators for over 70 years will become a reality with the establishment of the fourth landed campus in the OECS region, which will serve the purpose of affording opportunities to all persons to access tertiary education.
