UPP Supporters Protest Global Ports Agreement
Thursday 28th February, 2019-The main Opposition United Progressive has vowed to continue to register their disapproval of the agreement signed between the Government of Antigua and Barbuda and Global Ports Holding PLC.
Supporters loyal to UPP picketed outside Heritage Quay this morning, making known their disapproval of the agreement.
Dressed in their party colours, many held placards and chanted at the main entrance of the quay, just as passengers were disembarking three cruise vessels that dropped anchors in St. John’s.
Some placards described the agreement as a hijack and a giveaway of the port.
The 30-year agreement will allow Global Ports Holding PLC to bring its considerable financial strength and expertise to the expansion project at the cruise port, and to eliminate a debt of US$21 million that has been serviced sparingly for more than twenty years.
Global Ports will ensure that the completion of the dredging, already underway in the St. John’s Harbour, will allow the Oasis Class Ships, capable of carrying more than 6,000 passengers and 4,000 crew, to dock at a fifth berth parallel to the Point Wharf.
But the opposition party is not convinced it is in the best interest of Antigua and Barbuda.
Addressing protesters this morning, Party Leader Harold Lovell vowed to keep the pressure on.
