Twelve Nationals Receive Governor General’s Special Awards

Tuesday 13th August, 2019-Team Antigua Island Girls and sailing athlete Karl Bernard James were among twelve Antiguans and Barbudans who were conferred today with the Governor General’s Faithful and Meritorious Service and Halo Hero Humanitarian Awards during a ceremony at Government House.

The awards are the brainchild of Sir Rodney Williams, who felt that there are many citizens and residents who have performed exceedingly well in various areas of society, but who do not meet the requirements for national honours.

Recipients are awarded in three categories, to include Faithful and Meritorious Service Cross (highest category), Faithful and Meritorious Service Gold, Silver and Bronze.

Sir Rodney Williams, Grand Master of the Chancery of the Orders and Decorations of Antigua and Barbuda addressed the awardees and special guests this morning.

The other awardees were Carlo Falcone, Emilio Fagalde, Victor ‘Babu’ Samuel and Quincy Etinoff. The Halo Hero Humanitarian awardees were Jahrel Pelle in the tertiary category and Nathania Silston in the secondary category.

History was made when Elvira Bell, Christal Clashing, Samara Emmanuel, Kevinia Francis and Junella King became the first female team from Antigua and Barbuda to compete in the 2018/2019 Talisker Whisky Atlantic Rowing Challenge and the first all-black female team in the world to row across the Atlantic Ocean. It took them forty-seven days, eight hours and 25 minutes, covering 3,000 nautical miles from La Gomera in the Canary Islands to their homeland. For their efforts, they all received the Faithful and Meritorious Service Cross.

Mr. Karl James a mariner also received the Service Cross. He has served as Antigua and Barbuda’s Sailing Athlete for the past 37 years and has competed in sailing challenges all over the world, amassing an impressive medal collection. He is the ONLY sailor to have competed in two Olympic Games; the 1996 Atlanta, USA Games and the 2000 Sydney, Australia Games in Sailing, in the Laser Class.

He shared his thoughts following the ceremony.
