Three Antiguans are today celebrating a momentous occasion in their lives; their graduation with doctorate degrees from Western Illinois University, in the United States.
They are Dr. Tristan Browne of Piccadilly, and Doctors Zahra Lake and Sequoyah Survia of the Grays Green Community.
Dr. Survia’s dissertation was on the topic; Teachers’ Ways of Handling Teenage Pregnancy Cases in Secondary Schools in Antigua and Barbuda: A Qualitative Study. For Dr. Lake, her dissertation focused on: Perspectives on the Impact of Steelband Education in the African Diaspora: Exploring Empowerment, Cultural Identity, and Social Justice. While for Dr. Browne, he chose for his dissertation; The Impact of COVID-19 on Student Achievement in Texas: Deepening Disparities.
Speaking with Point Express newspaper, Dr. Survia described her achievement as a very challenging but rewarding milestone. “I had to find the balance, as I have two young children, between working full-time and as a full-time student. I’ve missed many opportunities to sleep for a full eight hours but it was still rewarding. There were some moments of self-doubt, but I pushed through and persevered,” she stated.
The graduation exercises were held on Saturday.
