Strike Action Hits Global Bank of Commerce, Union Accuses Management of Disrespect

Wednesday 6th March, 2019-Several failed attempts by Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union to get the management of Global Bank of Commerce to discuss a collective bargaining agreement resulted in employees walking off the job.

Industrial Relations Officer Fernando Samuel during a press conference today revealed there are a number of issues affecting employees, including the terms and conditions of the collective bargaining agreement  that the management of Global Bank of Commerce seems unwilling to address.

The Antigua Workers’ Union representative said following the Labour Department’s intervention, a meeting was held, at which time the bank gave a commitment to address the outstanding matters. A meeting was subsequently held with the union and bank’s management where the financial institution sought an extension in time to hear from their board of directors.

The union again sought the Labour Department’s intervention and a meeting was scheduled for 5th march, 2019. However, representatives of Global Bank of Commerce advanced an excuse for not attending.

A strike notice was issued today and nine of ten line staff downed tools at the bank’s headquarters on Friars Hill Road. The union says it will not tolerate the disrespect of employees.

Antigua/Barbuda Workers’ Union was expected to meet with employees today to chart the way forward.

Hours of work, overtime, compassionate leave, maternity leave, uniforms and acting allowances are among the 14 articles that are to be negotiated.
