Sports Tourism Boosted with Netball Tournament

Thursday 4th April, 2019-Antigua and Barbuda is receiving increased attention with the hosting of the Jean Pierre Caribbean Youth Netball Tournament at the YMCA Sports Complex which began on March 29th and concludes today (Thursday).

The tournament which has attracted over 100 participants and their management teams from seven Caribbean countries including Antigua and Barbuda is in its 19th year and this is Antigua and Barbuda’s third time hosting the tournament.

Sports Tourism is known for its social, environmental and economic impacts upon destinations and the Ministry of Tourism and Investment as a major sponsor of the tournament sees the hosting of the event as an opportunity to further boost Antigua and Barbuda’s product.

Ms. Karen Joseph Sports Tourism Officer within the Ministry of Tourism and Investment and President of the Antigua and Barbuda Netball Association said Antigua and Barbuda’s ability to successfully host regional events such as the Jean Pierre Caribbean Youth Netball Tournament contributes to the development of sports programs and the overall development of the country’s female athletes as many young ladies involved in sports hope that their talent will lead to a successful international career..

Joseph also said that prior to the event officials within the Netball association such as referees and scorers got the opportunity to upgrade their certifications.


Sports Tourism is a growing industry in the Caribbean and while water sports, cricket and football may be our biggest selling point, there are other aspects that can’t be ignored and hosting of the Jean Pierre Netball Tournament is a step into diversifying Antigua and Barbuda’s sports tourism industry.

The Jean Pierre Youth Netball Tournament was named after the renowned International Netballer, the late Jean Pierre of Trinidad & Tobago, is staged annually, by the Caribbean Netball Association (CNA).

This year’s participants in the tournament included Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Bermuda, Dominica, Grenada, St. Lucia and Trinidad and Tobago.
