The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) experienced a small fire at the Cook’s Sanitary Landfill on Monday 17th March, 2025 at approximately 9:30pm. The fire was quickly extinguished on Tuesday afternoon with coordinated efforts, however Landfill fires can be challenging, the site remains smothering with after fumes.
NSWMA would like to publicly thank all the government stakeholders who acted swiftly in the emergency situation to gain control of the fire and the management and staff of Cook’s Sanitary Landfill who joined forces to aid in the extinguishing of the blaze.
Finally, the Authority would like to express sincere apologies to the surrounding communities for the disruption of their day to day activities. To include the poor air quality, person with respiratory ailments are asked to stay indoors or take precautionary measures.
As, we move forward the Authority pledges to minimize hazardous events within the Landfill.
