The Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre has announced that its medical personnel were recently able to save the life of 37-year-old certified diver, Akeam Bretney, who was brought to SLBMC with decompression sickness—commonly known as “the bends”.

In a statement, SLBMC said its team was ready as thanks to the hospital’s hyperbaric chamber facility, Akeam received critical care close to home and has made a full recovery. In the photo, he gives the peace sign—a symbol of his strength and resilience.

Decompression sickness occurs when dissolved gases come out of solution in bubbles and can affect various areas of the body after a rapid ascent from deep waters. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is the gold standard for treating this condition, using pressurized oxygen to reduce symptoms and support recovery.

“We are incredibly grateful to the Calvin Ayre Foundation for generously gifting our hospital this vital piece of equipment, which helped make this outcome possible. Their support has been a powerful force for good—strengthening our capacity to save lives and care for you and your family when it matters most,” the SLBMC statement noted.

It said this is the kind of care that changes communities—and SLBMC is proud to be able to offer it right here in Antigua and Barbuda. Special thanks to Dr. Bienvenido Bridge, the physician who led the care team.
