Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre (SLBMC) takes another important step in advancing child health with the recent launch of its Newborn Hearing Screening Programme. This initiative, the first of its kind at the hospital, ensures that every baby born at SLBMC is screened early for potential hearing challenges — a critical step in giving children the best possible start in life.
Hearing is essential for a child’s speech, language, social, and emotional development. When hearing loss is detected early, children can receive timely interventions such as hearing aids, therapy, and family support. Research shows that babies identified with hearing loss within the first six months of life, and who receive early support, develop significantly better communication skills compared to those diagnosed later.
“Early detection is the foundation of better outcomes,” said Dr. Saleem Hughes, Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at SLBMC. “With newborn hearing screening now a standard part of our care, we can identify potential concerns right away and work with families to provide the necessary support. This programme reflects SLBMC’s commitment to ensuring that every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential.”
The screening process is simple, safe, and painless, using a small device that checks a newborn’s hearing while they sleep. Families receive results promptly, and those requiring further testing are guided to follow-up care and support.
