Two people were presented with letters of appointment to separate boards within the public sector.
Governor General’s Deputy, Sir Clare Roberts presided when Sir McLean was sworn in as a member of the Board of Commissioners of the Antigua Public Utilities Authority at a ceremony held at Government house on Monday.
In his opening remarks, Sir Clare expressed his privilege and honour in administering the oath to Sir McLean Emmanuel, who was re-appointed as a Commissioner of the Antigua and Barbuda Public Utilities Authority (APUA), and to Peter Abraham, who was appointed Deputy Chairman of the Social Security Board.
Sir Clare noted that Sir McLean’s ability to represent the voices of the many citizens and residents who admire and look up to him would strengthen the strategic direction of APUA and reinforce its mandate to deliver essential services efficiently and reliably.
Turning to Abraham, Sir Clare commended his steadfast service as a board member and acknowledged the Cabinet’s confidence in elevating him to the position of Deputy Chairman. He noted Abraham’s commitment to the welfare and security of the nation’s citizens.
“On reflection,” Sir Clare noted, “you are both part of the management of a monopoly. In the case of APUA, the Authority has the monopoly in the distribution of electricity, water, and telephone land lines. In the case of Social Security, it enjoys legislative protection against competition. I ask you to bear that in mind as you strive to provide the best utilities and the best social security possible.”
The ceremony was witnessed by officials and family members and was followed by brief interactions with Sir Clare.
