Shipping Companies Hold Back on Fee Increases

Tuesday 13th November, 2018-Shipping companies have backed down from proposed increased fees, following an intervention from Prime Minister the Hon. Gaston Browne.

In October, companies to include Crowley and Tropical Shipping announced a hike in shipping fees, which port officials stated were decisions made by the international businesses and are implemented during peak seasons.

There has been an outcry from importers who would have been made to pay the charges, which were expected to increase by 100% in some cases. But with the prime minister expressing concern in a letter to representatives of the companies, the planned increases won’t be implemented.

The prime minister has given assurances of limited displacement at the ports once rehabilitation work commences. He has also agreed to meet in the future with shipping companies’ representatives if the need arises.
