Productive Talks Held with Carnival Cruise Executives

Friday 22nd March, 2019-Senior executives of the Carnival Corporation and a high level delegation of the Antigua and Barbuda government held positive discussions in Miami today at the headquarters of Carnival Corporation in Miami.

A statement issued by the government outlined that the Antigua and Barbuda delegation has described the meeting as very productive and constructive, adding that both sides were very optimistic about future relations, based on the understandings today about how a mutually beneficial relationship between Carnival Corporation and Antigua and Barbuda can be strengthened.

No details of the discussions were made public, but the statement outlined that the participation at the highest levels by Carnival Corporation and the readiness to continue the gainful relations that exist, the Antigua and Barbuda delegation revealed that both parties look forward to another meeting, scheduled for next week, at which today’s understandings could be developed into an agreement.

It is widely believed that the Global Ports agreement and the proposed increase in the Passenger Head Tax for cruise liners were on the agenda of today’s meeting, issues that led Carnival Cruises to cancel future calls to port St. John’s.

Tourism Minister the Hon. Charles ‘Max’ Fernandez headed the Antiguan delegation that also included Minister of Health, Wellness and the Environment and a former Tourism Minister, the Hon. Molwyn Joseph, Senior Ambassador Sir Ronald Sanders and General Manager of the Antigua Port Authority, Darwin Telemaque.
