Now that negotiations for the purchase of the Eastern Caribbean Cancer Centre on
Queen Elizabeth Highway are nearing completion, the company that will take over
the operations of the centre is moving with alacrity to get the facility back into
operation.
A spokesman for the company disclosed that already an entity that specializes in
radio therapy repairs has been contacted and it will send a team to Antigua to
assess the radio therapy unit at the Cancer Centre.
The team will undertake any repairs that are necessary to return the equipment to
full functioning capabilities. Additionally, the team will conduct training of the
staff and may also assist with hiring for the various positions that will become
available.
The spokesman said the emphasis is on reviving the centre to full capabilities in a
short a time as possible. He added that there is likely to be a name-change for the
facility as the Eastern Caribbean Cancer Centre has been trade-marked. One of the
names under consideration is the Cancer Institute (of Antigua and Barbuda).
Prime Minister Gaston Browne announced that as part of the negotiations with the
company seeking to purchase the facility, the government wants to ensure that
there is a cap placed on the price that nationals/residents pay for cancer care.
He noted that a similar arrangements was in place with the now defunct Cancer
Centre.
