Port Workers Told Not To Circumvent The Process
Friday 1st June, 2018 –The Antigua and Barbuda Defense Force was deployed to the Deep Water Harbour this morning to avert an operational crisis after scores of employees walked off the job.
The men and women have expressed their refusal to work with the port’s General Manager, Darwin Telemaque who they are allegedly accusing of assaulting an employee during an exchange of words at the port on Thursday.
The employees walked from Deep Water Harbour to the Office of the Prime Minister through the rain to register their disapproval.
Prime Minister Gaston Browne while addressing the workers this morning reminded them of the importance of the facility, adding that there is a process which should not be circumvented in the airing of their grievances.
He told the employees to consider the impact their actions can have and urged them to follow the proper channels in the resolving the matter.
In a closed door meeting, the workers also reportedly raised the issue of back pay owed to them dating back to 2009.
As for yesterday’s altercation, the employee has reportedly filed a report with the police.
