Antigua and Barbuda is the venue for several major international events during this
year and Prime Minister Gaston Browne wants nationals to move to the head of the
line to benefit from the opportunities that will become available.
In an exclusive interview with Point Express, PM Browne noted that within a five-
week period the country will host the Fourth Conference of Small Islands
Developing States (May 27-30) and several matches for the ICT Men’s T20 World
Cup (June 1-29).
“We expect this year to be another good year for Antigua and Barbuda in terms of
economic performance. We are having two major events this year; the SIDS4
conference and the T20 cricket World Cup from which we anticipate that
thousands of visitors will travel to our country for the two events. So, from all
indications 2024 will be a good year for us all,” he noted.
Against this background, the prime minister is asking nationals to ‘seize the
opportunities’ that will present themselves with the influx of so many people into
the country. “We know that there are many opportunities from which they can
capitalize as the influx of visitors will naturally spark a jump in spending by
visitors and all we ask is for our people to seize these opportunities that will
become available for their individual benefit and for the benefit of the country
overall,” he urged.
For its part, the government will be undertaking a road repair programme to
improve many of the roadways in time for the two major international events, but
which will continue long after the visitors depart.
PM Browne thanked the people of Antigua and Barbuda for their patience in
coping with the bad roads and he is assuring them that roadworks will become a
top priority going forward.
