Prime Minister Gaston Browne has responded to calls emanating from elements
within the opposition United Progressive Party for a campaign of civil unrest and
other forms of illegal behavior, as the party seems unwilling or unable to accept its
defeat at the polls in the January 18, 2023, general elections.
Speaking on the Browne and Browne show on Pointe FM on Saturday, PM
Browne said, among the actions being contemplated, is a suggestion from party
chairman, D. Gisele Isaac for protesters to disrupt the normal traffic flow on
Market Street, by parking their vehicles in the middle of the street and leave them
there.
“She has come up with this ‘brilliant act’, an act, if committed, would be illegal.
She – Isaac – is publicly encouraging individuals to go and park their vehicles in
the middle of Market Street to disrupt traffic. Well tell D. Gisele Isaac to park her
vehicle there because it would be Cooks Dump that she would have to collect it,”
he warned.
The prime minister also had a stern warning to those who are saying it’s time to
‘get radical.’ “Well, who wants to get radical can get radical. I want it known that
the laws of this country apply to all of us, and whereas I am not responsible for
enforcing the law, that is a function of the police. I can say openly that the
expectation of the executive is that law enforcement will do their work. Where
there are any instances of infringement of the law by anyone, in government or out
of government, we expect law enforcement to act appropriately. Those who want
to commit a criminal activity, end up in court with a criminal record; that has
consequences,” he cautioned.
PM Browne recalled that whilst he has participated in protest actions in the past, he
has always drawn the line about not committing any criminal acts.
