Officials Optimistic of Positive Outcome at Barrymore

Monday 15th April, 2019-Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Works Clarence Pilgrim is optimistic there will be a positive outcome as it relates to the removal of the remaining residents at the old Barrymore Hotel.

The locks to the units were changed and eviction notices were served recently to the residents there, which were met with resistance from several people who are maintaining they have no other place in which to re-locate. That led to a standoff recently when the Works Department employees aided by the police, showed up to enforce the order.

Several weeks on, Permanent Secretary Pilgrim was asked to give an update on the situation at Barrymore.

He stated that resolving the matter is of importance and they are dealing with the cases on an individual bases.


Scores of Barbudans were provided with temporary shelter at Barrymore following the destruction caused to the sister isle by Hurricane Irma in 2017.

However, they were not the only ones residing there. Several Antiguans were also discovered to have taken up residency dating back several years.
