No More Exemptions: PM Informs Telecommunications Companies
Tuesday 24th July, 2018- A tough talking Prime Minister Gaston Browne has served notice to two of the country’s telecommunications companies, informing them that their tax holidays are over.
Declaring that government is under taxed to the tune of $ 328 million a year, the prime minister blamed the shortfall in tax collection as the reason behind the structural problems being faced.
He says if the issue is not addressed with urgency, there may be further problems in the future. That means that going forward; the two telecommunications providers will have to pay their share of taxes.
The finance minister also criticized business owners who are constantly seeking tax exemptions but are making profits. Mr. Browne also served notice that those concessions will come to an end.
The prime minister was at the time moving the second and third readings of the Tax Administration Procedure Act, 2018, which harmonizes and simplifies the operation of tax administrations and procedures of Antigua and Barbuda Tax Laws.
