Patrons attending shows and other events at the Antigua Recreation Grounds, now
Carnival City, are being greeted by a transformed venue with different directions
for the stage and other innovations.
Minister responsible for the Festivals Commission, Honorable Daryll Matthew said
the stage has again been shifted to entirely face the ACB Caribbean Stands on the
side closest to the War Memorial.
The innovations include the creation of a ‘Vendors Village’ in front of the Andy
Roberts Stand, where approximately forty-five vendors have been given spots to
operate.
“We have created a Vendors Village on the field, immediately in front of the Andy
Roberts Stand. The vendors will be set up there; we have picnic tables that have
been lined out properly. What we are trying to do is to bring an atmosphere where
when you come into Carnival City for a show, you don’t have to walk backstage to
get something to eat as you now have an area specially demarcated; the area is
fenced off. The tents that the vendors are using are all tasteful and nice. There are
picnic tables so that you can buy food and eat, this now creates an atmosphere
where the vendors can do better business because they are closer to the people,”
Matthew explained.
The minister also described the decorations that now adorn both the Andy Roberts
Stand and the Player’s Pavilion (the Viv Richards Stand) where tall drapes of
bright colours stretch from the roofs to the lower levels.
“It’s going to be a fantastic place to be, with the different foods, the drinks, and the
atmosphere; all in all, a new attraction for Carnival City. This, I believe is
something that the public would like and appreciate,” he declared.
In reference to the orientation of the stage, the minister said much thought went
into creating an atmosphere at Carnival City that gives a different ‘feel’ when
entering the grounds.
