The driver of a cement truck which crashed in the Cedar Valley area on Tuesday
has become the nation’s first road fatality for 2023.
Head of the Traffic Department Superintendent Elson Quammie has confirmed that
twenty-nine-year-old Jahkeem Murray succumbed to injuries late Tuesday night.
Hours before his death there was a call for O+ blood to aid in his care.
Supt. Quammie said, Murray was driving the cement truck up an incline when it
began to roll back. He reportedly jumped from the vehicle and sustained multiple
injuries. Murray was rushed to the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre where he
underwent emergency operations. The reports are that he was placed in the
Intensive Care Unit and showed signs of improvement, however, his situation
worsened soon after, and at 10:33pm he was pronounced dead.
It is believed that the weight of the cement truck caused it to roll back down the
hill and strike a utility pole, breaking the pole into several pieces. The truck
eventually came to a rest on its side. The incident happened near the Cedar Valley
Golf Course.
Murray resided at Union Road in Hatten. He is said to have been the father of a
young daughter.
