The police have revealed that more young people are either the victims of criminal
activities or are themselves perpetrators of crime.
Those are the conclusions of a report made by the Commissioner of Police Atlee
Rodney, in his annual update n the state of criminal activities in Antigua and
Barbuda.
He revealed that there is a growing number of young people under the age of 18
years who are being arrested for criminal activities.
“In terms of the numbers, there were twenty persons under the age of 18 who were
arrested during the past year for various crimes. We also had a number of young
persons who were victims of crime. Under the period of review, the number of
persons between the ages of 10 and 25 who were victims of crime totaled 139; 69
males and 70 females. The figure for those arrested between the ages of 14 and 25
years totaled 246 young persons who were arrested,” he disclosed.
The Commission said the force is very concerned with what is happening with the
nation’s youth and that it is committed to work with stakeholders to address the
problem.
The issue of youth criminal activities, especially youth on youth violence has
become a national concern raising to the level of the prime minister who has been
voicing his concerns in the past weeks.
