More than $17 Million disbursed in home improvement loans

The government has made available low-interest loans to individuals in the
community to carry out home improvements to their properties ahead of the
hurricane season.
The announcement comes from Social Welfare Minister, Sir Molwyn Joseph, who
disclosed that more than two hundred persons have benefited so far. He said most
people prefer to stay in their own homes or with relatives during the passage of a
storm, so it was important that these persons were able to access funds to carry out
improvements to their homes making them more resilient.
“Over the last several months, in Cashew Hill and McKinnons in particular, we
have financed over two hundred homes at low interest rates. So these people
received monies to fix up their homes to be better able to withstand the storms.
They would not need to leave their homes to go into a shelter should a storm
approaches,” he remarked.
Sir Molwyn said the main beneficiaries of the low interest loans have been first-
responders. “The idea is that a police man or a nurse should not be in a home that
is not safe. So these categories of workers are given priority to upgrade their
homes. This means if they have to leave their homes (for duty), they should feel
assured that their homes and their families are secured,” he stated.
The loans carry an interest rate of one percent.
