The mental health and wellness advocacy group, Wadadli Initiative for Self-Care and Healing (WISH) is expressing concern about the recent developments related to two apparent suicide attempts in Freetown and Ottos.

In a media release, WISH noted that it continues to highlight the gaps in healthcare coverage including mental wellness initiatives and outpatient services which can foster an environment of healing in Antigua and Barbuda.

“While we acknowledge Prime Minister Gaston Browne’s recommitment to advancing the national mental health framework, it is critical that those living with mental illnesses have access to lifesaving care and treatment.

“Reiterating our statements during World Suicide Prevention Month in September, it is important that communities across the country familiarize themselves with warning signs to assist our loved ones in time of need to alleviate feelings of distress, loneliness and helplessness,” the release noted.

WISH is also calling on the local media to utilize best-practice when reporting on suicide, crafting stories that prioritise empathy and compassion while rejecting all forms of sensationalism.

WISH remains steadfast in its advocacy for mental wellbeing and gives gratitude to its partners and supporters – locally, regionally and internationally.

The Wadadli Initiative for Self-care and Healing (WISH) describes itself as a mental health platform in Antigua and Barbuda, dedicated to revolutionizing how the nation thinks about, talks about, and cares for mental health. Through education and advocacy, WISH works to break the silence, shatter stigmas, and create positive change in mental health awareness.
