Following the political developments over the past week, where the representative
for the All Saints West constituency, Independent MP Anthony Smith, has made
an accommodation with the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party, several decisions
have been made affecting two constituencies.
Political Leader of the ABLP and Prime Minister Gaston Browne said the party has
formally called off its planned primary in the All Saints West constituency
between Lamin Newton and Regis Burton.
It is anticipated that the party will formally ask Smith to be its candidate in that
constituency for the next general elections.
Further, now that the primary has been canceled, the party has announced that
Lamin Newton will now be its caretaker/candidate for the All Saints East and St.
Luke constituency. This is based on the fact that Newton is from All Saints and has
familial and other ties with the constituency.
The word is that Newton will also be named to the Upper House of parliament as a
senator.
