Encouraging Excellence Through Education
As a group of sixteen students prepare to depart for studies in the People’s Republic of China on scholarships offered by that country’s government, Prime Minister Gaston Browne has emphasized the importance of education as a pathway to personal growth, national pride, and global competitiveness.
The nation’s leader made the point as he addressed the students at a send-off ceremony held at the Office of the prime Minister on Thursday. Students were encouraged to pursue higher education, and use their academic success as an example for others, steering young people away from crime and violence.
“I pledge the full support of the government to ensure that students’ academic journeys are successful, while also reminding you of your responsibility to work diligently. Education, I wish to emphasise, is not only a personal achievement but also a representation of family, community, and nation,” PM Browne stated.
Competing on the World Stage
The students were urged to view themselves not just as local or regional competitors but as international contenders capable of excelling alongside the best in the world. The prime minister encouraged high ambitions, including aiming for terminal degrees such as PhDs, while also ensuring that graduates become effective, disciplined, and high-performing professionals.
Expectations of Leadership and Nation Building
In his remarks, PM Browne highlighted that today’s students are not only the future but also the present leaders-in-waiting. As current leaders grow older, the governance and development of Antigua and Barbuda will be entrusted to the younger generation. Students were urged to set high standards and prepare themselves for leadership roles across various sectors.
The prime minister reaffirmed the government’s strong youth focus, promising to continue creating opportunities for young people to seize and monetize their skills. The goal is not only intellectual success but also economic empowerment—encouraging students to consider entrepreneurship and side ventures in addition to traditional employment.
The speech emphasized that education should not only prepare students for jobs but also give them the ability to create wealth. Students were reminded that financial success is not inherently negative, but rather a means to progress and stability. By monetizing their skills and pursuing entrepreneurial opportunities, they can maximize the value of their education while taking care of personal and family obligations.
